Belleville’s mayor is providing an update on previously discussed local industrial development charges.
At the July 27 City Council meeting, Mayor Neil Ellis and council heard directly from the Belleville Chamber of Commerce and members of the local business and industrial community regarding concerns about the proposed changes to these charges.
The Development Charges Study is a legislated process used to calculate the costs that may be recovered to support infrastructure required as the community grows. While the study proposes lower residential development charges, it also calculates non-residential development charges for Council’s consideration.
In a statement Tuesday, Ellis noted he has spoken to city staff about the feedback and concerns and the importance of ensuring Belleville remains competitive when it comes to attracting and retaining industrial investment.
“Our industrial sector is an important part of Belleville’s economy and its continued growth,” stated Ellis.
“Supporting our existing businesses and the jobs they provide, while continuing to attract new industrial investment, growth and employment opportunities, has been and will continue to be a priority for both myself and the city.”
Ellis added the concerns brought forward by the business and industrial community will be an important consideration as staff continue their review and maintaining Belleville’s position as a competitive place to invest, expand and create jobs must remain a priority as city stakeholders determine the best path forward.
