Students at Loyalist College in Belleville are mourning the death of a recent graduate.
Peterborough Police responded to Beavermead Park on Friday at 7:30 p.m., after a man went into the water and did not resurface.
First responders were able to locate the 23-year-old. He was sent to Peterborough hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as Kamal by students at Loyalist. He moved from India to Canada at the end of 2023. He worked as a welder and later became a delivery driver. He had been based in Markdale, which is a small community south of Owen Sound.
Kamal’s friends have launched a GoFundMe Page with a goal of raising $35,000 to help cover funeral expenses and return him to India.
So far, it has raised over $25,000.
