Exciting infrastructure developments are being made for Tyendinaga Township.
Tyendinaga hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and official launch for its new community cycling wayfinding infrastructure and cycling program on Tuesday.
Included in this development are six signed loop routes on local backroads, a route information kiosk, access to helmets and reflective vests, and bike repair tools at the Tyendinaga Recreation Complex.
The launch of the new community cycling program, in collaboration with BOQ.BIKE, was made possible by a $97,000 Seed grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF).
“We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful areas in the province, and exploring the backroads and trails is often the best way to see that beauty,” said Ric Bresee, MPP for Hastings–Lennox and Addington. “I want to congratulate Tyendinaga Township for taking the lead to expand these cycling opportunities, building tourism and improving active lifestyles.”
The funding supported the transformation of Tyendinaga’s backroads into a permanent, accessible cycling network.
The six signed loop routes, each ranging from a 14-kilometre trail to a full-day 49-kilometre gravel ride, welcome cyclists of all ages and abilities to explore Tyendinaga’s scenic roads and countryside. Riders can follow accessible signs themselves or use the free Ride With GPS app.
“We’re proud to see this cycling initiative come to life in Tyendinaga Township. Thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we’re creating new opportunities for residents of all ages to get active, explore our beautiful rural community, and feel confident doing so,” said Claire Kennelly, Mayor, Tyendinaga Township.
In addition to the launch, Tyendinaga Township is excited to announce a full season of free community programming designed to get families and kids on bikes, including monthly group rides throughout the summer and fall.
A community celebration will take place on July 1 at the Recreation Complex, home of the Township’s longstanding Canada Day Family Bike Rally. This year’s celebration includes a free Bike Rodeo from 1:30–4:30pm, open to children of all ages and abilities.
