A chance is available this Saturday to see the start of a new era for a historic building in Wooler.
The Wooler and Area Community Organization will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony and Open House at the Old Wooler Schoolhouse at 62 County Road 5 on Saturday, June 13 from 10 am to 3 pm.
The groundbreaking will bring municipal, provincial, and federal officials together with community members to mark the start of work and renovations of the Schoolhouse property. Visitors will be invited to tour the building and review the plans to renovate the Schoolhouse and return it to community service.
The Wooler Schoolhouse Project received $1 million in funding through the federal government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program to return the renovated schoolhouse to community service as a modernized, sustainable, and accessible recreation facility.
The renovation will include construction of a second entrance at the rear of the building, the installation of an elevator, a new well and septic system, and much more. These improvements will significantly reduce operational GHG emissions and create a sustainable and accessible space for all residents.
“This is really exciting. Thanks to great community support and a timely grant from the federal government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program we are preserving a heritage building beloved by many and upgrading it to provide greatly needed community space for the future,” said Sue Dorland, Board Member.
“We are proud to support these renovations to the Old Wooler Schoolhouse, which will renew the life of this historic infrastructure and provide the community with a safe and sustainable place to gather, learn, and play for many generations to come”, said Chris Malette, Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte.
The Wooler and Area Community Organization was created in 2020 as a non-profit focused on saving the 1915 Wooler Schoolhouse and restoring it to provide affordable recreation programs and an event space.
