The Quinte Region Landlords Association is taking leadership on two critical social issues affecting Ontario’s rental housing sector: preventing human trafficking in rental properties and reducing discrimination against applicants with criminal records.
To support education and awareness, QRLA is hosting a free, province-wide webinar in collaboration with leading organizations. The Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking will deliver a presentation on how to identify potential signs of trafficking in rental units and the appropriate steps to take.
Representatives from the John Howard Society and Toronto Victim Services will address the barriers faced by individuals with criminal records and explain why, in many
cases, they can be responsible, reliable tenants.
“Human trafficking is happening in communities across Ontario, often hidden in plain sight,” said QRLA President Robert Gentile. “The challenge is knowing what to look for and how to respond safely and effectively. Through this webinar, we aim to equip housing providers and tenants with the knowledge they need to help combat this serious issue.”
Addressing the topic of tenant screening, Gentile emphasized the importance of fairness and context.
“Many individuals with criminal records are law-abiding, responsible people who made a mistake in the past and deserve access to housing,” he said.
“A blanket refusal policy is not only unfair—it can overlook applicants who would make excellent tenants. It’s important to consider each person’s circumstances and the nature of their record. We’re not talking about repeat ongoing violent offenders here. Police in Ontario can be too quick to lay charges based on suspicion and without any proper investigation.”
“Many people who should not have been charged in the first place, often accept plea deals or plead guilty because they cannot afford to defend themselves. That results in wrongful criminal
records. Others who may have legitimate records from a wide array of non-violent offences, are no threat to others or the community and deserve housing just as much as anyone.”
The free webinar takes place on Tuesday, June 23 from 7 to 8 pm and will highlight how more informed and balanced decision-making can benefit both housing providers and communities.
