Madoc Council has declared its deputy mayor’s position vacant.
Mayor Loyde Blackburn and the remainder of council made that decision at a special meeting on Monday, after they and the municipality received a letter of resignation from Larry Rollins.
Rollins was acclaimed to the role of deputy mayor in the last municipal election; however, it was discovered that he had not filed his 2022 election report as required under the Municipal Elections Act.
Council originally chose to defer the decision to remove him from the position, but Rollins decided to step down due to the ongoing legal challenges involved that would not serve the taxpayers of the Township well.
In his resignation letter, he explained he did not raise campaign funds, receive contributions or incur campaign expenses.
He also noted he never received the financial statement by registered mail following the last election.
“I want to be clear, my resignation should not be interpreted in any way as an admission of wrongdoing,” his letter read in part.
“I have always acted honestly, in good faith and in the best interests of the community. I’ve been privileged to serve. However, it became apparent that resolving this matter would likely require lengthy and costly legal process.”
Blackburn and council thanked Rollins for his commitment and dedication to council.
Rollins has filed for mayor in the upcoming 2026 municipal election.
