OPP recognizes and honours fallen members with bridge dedications

The OPP gathered alongside family members, community leaders and partners to remember two fallen members in the Napanee area on Tuesday.

A bridge dedication ceremony was held in honour of Constable Richard Arnold Beard and Constable Mont Alexander Wood who lost their lives while serving in the line of duty.

Constable Richard Arnold Beard, aged 51, died on August 28, 1921, from injuries sustained while responding to an attempted break-in at a jewellery store. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Constable Mont Alexander Wood, aged 59, died on December 1, 1951, from injuries sustained while responding to a motor vehicle call. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Memorial signs have been placed at bridges in Napanee with Constable Beard and Constable Wood’s names on them to permanently recognize their sacrifices and dedciation to the service, their community and their families.

Constable Beard’s bridge is located at Highway 401 and Newburgh Road. Constable Wood’s bridge is located at Highway 401 and County Road 41.

“These bridge dedications commemorate the service and sacrifice of Constable Beard and Constable Wood,” stated OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

“These officers served their community with pride and honour, their legacies continue to inspire today and will never be forgotten.”
