The Belleville Police Services Board took time to recognize a large group of people this week involved in one of the largest and longest investigations in the city’s history.
Police Chief Murray Rodd presented a Chief’s Commendation to everyone involved in solving the case involving a violent sexual assault at the Ramada during the city’s Waterfront Festival in July of 2000. That investigation led to a conviction and a 13-year sentence last year.
COMMENDATION – The successful resolution of the 2000 Ramada Inn sexual assault stands as one of the
most significant investigative achievements in recent Belleville Police Service history and a shining example of teamwork. After more than two decades without answers, the
combined efforts of detectives, forensic specialists, sworn officers, civilian personnel, and external partners culminated in a guilty plea and a 13-year sentence delivered in
2025, bringing long-overdue justice to the victim and pride to the Service.
This accomplishment highlights the power of collaboration across divisions, generations, and jurisdictions. It reflects strategic leadership, investigative persistence,
forensic innovation, legal coordination, and strong community partnership. Most importantly, it delivered long-awaited accountability for the victim after 25 years.
This recognition is extended to the entire Belleville Police Service team involved in this investigation. Every member, past and present, in every role, whether large or
small, visible or behind the scenes, contributed through their dedication, expertise, and perseverance to this landmark success. While not every individual can be named, all
share in this achievement, and together the team stands as an exemplary model of excellence, resilience, and innovation in policing.
