Student Trustees elected for upcoming school year at ALCDSB

Big congratulations are in order for three newly elected Student Trustees for the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board.
These students have been elected by their student senate peers for the upcoming 2026/2027 school year.
The ALCDSB has three student trustees, one representing the eastern jurisdiction of the board, one representing the western jurisdiction and one representing Indigenous voice.
Student Trustees contribute to the school board in a number of ways, including representing all elementary and secondary students in the system, attending monthly board and committee
Darren Fernandes, who is in Grade 11 at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in Kingston, will represent the eastern region of ALCDSB.
“I have always believed that leadership is shown through responsibility, consistency, and the willingness to contribute,” said Fernandes. “From academics to athletics, and service within my school and parish, I have always sought ways to contribute, improve, and lead by example.”
Josephine Boyce, who is in Grade 10 at St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School in Belleville, will represent the western region of ALCDSB.
“In the role of a student trustee, my goal will be to help create spaces that motivate students, encourage passions, and promote ambition,” said Boyce.
Tess Shakell, a Grade 10 student at Nicholson Catholic College, will represent Indigenous voice from across ALCDSB.
“Connecting my culture and community has let me develop leadership skills, responsibility, and a strong desire to advocate for Indigenous students and their voices,” said Shakell.
“On behalf of the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, I want to warmly welcome Darren, Josephine, and Tess as our Student Trustees for 2026/2027,” said Carey Smith-Dewey, Director of Education. “Your leadership, insight, and commitment to student voice are essential in Catholic education as we continue to build safe, welcoming, and inclusive school communities.”
