Quinte Health is adjusting the model of care on four inpatient units to better reflect the needs of patients.
“Across our medicine units, patients are presenting with greater acuity and complexity than in the past. They require more frequent clinical assessment, closer monitoring, and timely response to changes in their condition,” Quinte Health officials stated.
“These changes ensure we have the right mix of care providers working together to support safe, high-quality care.”
Like many hospitals, officials noted QH has experienced challenges recruiting enough nurses in recent years. During that time, the number of Personal Support Worker roles was increased to support care teams and maintain patient care through a period of significant system pressure.
“As staffing has stabilized, we are aligning the model of care with the clinical needs of patients and the level of care required today. These changes are specific to three of our most acute units at Belleville General Hospital — Quinte 4, 5 and 6 — as well as one overnight shift on the inpatient unit at Trenton Memorial Hospital, where care will transition from PSW to RPN coverage.”
Registered Practical Nurses bring a clinical scope of practice that includes assessing patients, monitoring their condition, administering medications, and responding to changes in a patient’s health. They also contribute to care planning and work closely with the broader team to coordinate care.
This nursing-led model of RNs and RPNs ensures patients receive the right care, in the right place, from the right care provider.
Personal Support Workers will continue to be a valued part of our care teams at Quinte Health, in less acute and post-acute care settings.
