Members of the Bancroft OPP investigated a report involving a possible weapon at North Hastings High School on Wednesday.

Police were alerted after school officials identified a student that was reportedly in possession of an item during a fire drill that appeared to be a firearm.

Officers on scene confirmed the item was a replica cap gun and police conducted follow‑up investigation to ensure there was no further risk to students or staff.

No actual firearm was involved.

A youth was arrested and charged following the investigation and was released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The OPP reminds the public that false or unverified reports involving school safety can cause significant distress and may result in criminal charges. Anyone with concerns regarding school safety is encouraged to report them directly to police or school officials.
