The Municipality of Brighton has recognized some of the people who go above and beyond for their community on Thursday.
The Municipality of Brighton hosted its annual Volunteer Recognition Event at the Owen Gibb Community Hall, providing an opportunity for council members, staff, previous award recipients, and community volunteers to gather, celebrate service, and recognize those who generously share their time.
The special occasion honoured nine outstanding residents, seven of which received the Spirit of Service Award, for their diverse volunteerism in the community.

Also, Anna Rittwage and Durene Swain were the proud recipients of the Brighton Community Service Excellence Award. Both women have served as executive members of the Save Our Heritage Organization for more than 30 years and have dedicated their lives to preserving and celebrating Brighton’s history.
As strong, independent leaders, Anna and Durene were key members of the committee responsible for planning, fundraising, and building the Proctor Simpson Barn. Through their long-standing commitment as President and Treasurer of Save Our Heritage, they have provided steady leadership to ensure the Proctor House Museum remains open each summer. Under their guidance, tens of thousands of visitors have toured the museum and gained a deeper understanding of Brighton’s heritage.
In addition, thousands of patrons have enjoyed outstanding live theatre, concerts, and entertainment at the Proctor Simpson Barn. Anna Rittwage and Durene Swain have truly been devoted stewards of Brighton’s heritage and dedicated caretakers of two of the municipality’s treasured landmarks, the Proctor House Museum and the Proctor Simpson Barn.
“Anna and Durene represent the very best of community service in Brighton.” said Mayor Brian Ostrander. “For as long as many of us can remember—and likely much longer—they have worked tirelessly to protect, preserve, and champion the Proctor House Museum. Their dedication ensures this important piece of our local history remains alive and accessible for future generations. I would also like to congratulate everyone who was nominated; each nomination reflects the remarkable generosity and commitment that exists throughout our community. Volunteers are the heart of Brighton, and I encourage residents of all ages to consider getting involved and making a difference in a cause they care about.”
The Brighton Community Service Excellence Award (previously named Citizen of the Year) recognizes individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact to the municipality and its residents. Past recipients include Wayne Jefferson (2025), Ralph De Jong (2024), Craig Kerr (2023), and Sharon Graham (2022).
