Belleville Police marks huge step in modernizing emergency response system

By Brock Ormond Apr 23, 2026 | 2:45 PM

The Belleville Police Service has improved and modernized its emergency response technology with the successful implementation of Next Generation 9-1-1.

The BPS announced the rollout of the nationwide upgrade that improves how 9-1-1 calls are received and managed. While residents will continue to dial 9-1-1 the same way in an emergency, the new system introduces several important enhancements, including:

  • Faster and more accurate location information
  • Stronger reliability and cybersecurity protections
  • An automated text back feature
  • Improved backup capabilities in case of system failures

The Ontario government has provided over $1.3 million since 2022 to support Belleville Police Service’s transition to NG9-1-1.

In an evolving world where demand for service is increasing, police officials say public expectations of transparency are high, and technology continues to advance, Belleville Police Service remains committed to modernization.

Upgrades like NG9-1-1 ensure BPS is prepared to meet today’s challenges while positioning the service for the future.

These improvements will not change how residents dial 9-1-1. In an emergency, residents can continue to call 9-1-1 as usual.

Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd stated with the community continuing to grow and service demands increasing, Next Generation 9-1-1 represents a transformative step for public safety in Belleville.

“This technology will provide our officers and dispatchers with real-time, actionable information, allowing them to make faster decisions and respond more effectively to emergencies,” he stated.

“Beyond speed, it enhances situational awareness, improves coordination across agencies, and strengthens the trust our residents place in emergency services. With these capabilities, we can ensure that help is not only faster but smarter, keeping both our community and our first responders safer than ever before.”
