Quinte Judo athletes put in strong showing at Golden North Judo Championships

The Quinte Judo club was well represented in Peterborough this past weekend, at the start of the Golden North Open Judo Championships! This was the first date for what is to become a strong draw, as it is being recognized as an “international B competition”.

Competing in his first event since starting Judo this season, Doug Robinson fought in the U18 event for yellow to orange belts (novice) for those under 81kg. Although Doug made weight for his actual category of -73kg, there wasn’t enough participants, so he stepped up to the next division. Winning against two of his three opponents, there wound up a three-way tie for 2nd place. Robinson had to settle for a bronze medal, as the others had higher scores in their matches.

Also competing in this weekend was Scott Morgan, in the Veterans division (over age 30). Unfortunately, with this being a new event & only 200 participants (kids through adults), he wound up in a combined novice division of three. 90 kg Morgan is 45 & was up against a 25-yr old of his weight category, & a 140kg/6’ 5” fighter from the veteran’s pool (almost a foot taller)! Scott lead his match against the 140kg fighter with a couple of scores but was eventually thrown for a full point which ended the match. Lost his next match & brought home the bronze!

The next competition for the Judo club will be the Tora Annual Judo Shiai (competition) in Brampton, April 26-27th.  Quinte Judo Club operates out of the Quinte Masonic Centre in Frankford.
