As we tasted spring weather yesterday before it was cruelly snatched away again overnight, we must remember that patience is a virtue and progress (while slow sometimes) does eventually have an impact.
News that we have longed for over the past few months finally came through yesterday, with an announcement that The Bridge, one of three components of the HART Hub Hastings Prince Edward, will open on April 9 at 1 Alhambra Square after relocating from 125 Church St. South.
There have been extensive delays at the site due to construction issues related to the state of the building, which was no surprise to anyone who has been there or knows it well. That has resulted in significant delays, including the opening being pushed back to after the current winter is basically over.
Still, it’s an amazing sign that this vital hub for help for the homeless will soon open its doors.
As you look outside today and think “wow, this snow and bitter cold is dangerous, and I hoped we wouldn’t have to deal with it again for months”, imagine what it would be like if what you see outside your living room WAS your living room.
Homelessness and the addiction and mental health challenges that often lead to it or make it worse are not inconveniences or just details to include on social service and crime reports.
They are life-limiting, life-threatening and often life-ending.
The Bridge is making a difference now and will make more of one in the new location. It’s not the end of the journey, but it’s a vital step to help people get their lives back on track.
