By Paul Martin Jan 6, 2026 | 3:31 AM

Charges have been laid by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in connection with an incident in which the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked its mandate in Northumberland.

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, shortly after midnight, officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the OPP were conducting speed enforcement on County Road 45 when they observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Moments later, the vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle collision. As a result of the collision, the SIU invoked its mandate.

On Saturday, January 3, 2026, following a parallel police investigation, Brent HICKEY, 25-years-old of Port Hope, was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, section 320.14(1)(a)
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), section 320.14(1)(b)
  • Dangerous operation – section 320.13(1)

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
