As the holiday season arrives, many people look forward to a well-earned break—time to gather with family, reflect on the year past, and recharge for the year ahead. Yet across Hastings, Prince Edward, and Lennox & Addington Counties, thousands of workers continue to report for duty, ensuring essential services remain available and local economies continue to function.
From health care professionals, personal support workers, and first responders, to retail employees, grocery staff, hospitality and tourism workers, and transportation and logistics professionals, many sectors remain fully operational throughout the holidays. Their commitment ensures communities stay safe, supported, and connected during one of the busiest times of the year.
Behind the scenes, utilities and infrastructure crews maintain critical systems, agri-food and manufacturing workers keep production moving, and media professionals help keep the public informed. While their work may not always be visible, its impact is felt daily—especially during the holiday season.
For many of these workers, this time of year brings unique challenges. Increased demand, staffing shortages, longer shifts, and time away from loved ones are common realities. Despite these pressures, workers across all sectors continue to demonstrate professionalism, resilience, and dedication.
“The holiday season is a powerful reminder of just how interconnected our workforce truly is,” says Sandi Ramsay, Executive Director of the Centre for Workforce Development. “Every shift worked and every service delivered during this time helps sustain our communities. These workers are the backbone of our local economy, and their contributions deserve our recognition and respect.”
At the Centre for Workforce Development (CFWD), workforce resilience remains a year-round focus. Through labour market research, employer engagement, and collaborative planning, CFWD works with partners across sectors to better understand workforce needs and support sustainable solutions—particularly in rural communities where staffing challenges can be more pronounced.
As 2025 draws to a close and attention turns toward the year ahead, CFWD remains committed to strengthening the workforce across Hastings, Prince Edward, and Lennox & Addington Counties. By supporting collaboration between employers, workers, educators, and community organizations, CFWD continues to help build a workforce that is adaptable, inclusive, and prepared for the future.
To everyone working through the holiday season—thank you. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and your work makes a meaningful difference every day of the year.On behalf of CFWD staff and Board members, we wish everyone a safe, joyful, and happy holiday season.
