A key piece of Brighton’s history will be available for people to rent out for special events.
The Hops Barn was previously used to store hops for brewing, with its original construction dating back to the 1800’s.
On Monday, Brighton Council voted to allow people to be able to book it for special events.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says it will be a seamless transition for our parks and rec department.
Hops barn was going to be demolished in the late 80’s and 90’s, but the community rallied behind it leading it to being torn down and re-assembled and later moved to the Codrington Community Centre property.
There is no heat and no washrooms available on site so that will limit some of the potential uses (especially during the winter) but Ostrander says the building has a rich history in the community and these kinds of barns are few and far between so it’s great that we are continuing to preserve a piece of our heritage.
Ostrander says special thanks also go to the Brian Todd Community Fund which provided the money needed to spearhead the restoration and relocation.
They also did all the project management, including paying for the engineers and special heritage contractors.
