Speeding infractions appeared to make up a large share of more than 1,500 charges laid in a regional blitz this past long weekend.

An OPP traffic enforcement initiative on roads and highways across eastern Ontario was meant to increase and improve safety on the roadways, waterways and trails.

Results show 893 charges were laid for speeding, with 92 being handed out for seatbelt violations and 36 for impaired driving.

Other charges included failing to have proper insurance – 83, stunt driving, impaired driving, alcohol or cannabis accessible to the driver and distracted driving.

Marine officers also laid a total of 19 charges under the Canada Shipping Act for offences related to a lack or life jackets or other safety equipment.
