Beyond the Headlines – Quinte West provides free Wi-Fi hot spots

By Hailey MacDonald Aug 22, 2025 | 1:18 PM

I would like to congratulate Quinte West Council for taking a step that will enable people to save money, and improve accessibility while making them literally feel more connected to the community.

Quinte West has launched free public Wi-Fi at more than 13 locations, including popular destinations like Centennial Park, the Duncan McDonald Memorial Community Gardens and Mount Pelion.

This follows through on a proposal in the  City’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan, where access to free public Wi-Fi was said to help build healthier, and more connected communities.

While technically complicated, this idea is both simple and far-reaching, and will help people in many ways.

First of all, it’s a great selling point for these 13 locations, especially places like Centennial Park where cell service may suffer at times because of crowd size at certain events.

Secondly, it helps people save on data charges or roaming, because not everyone has unlimited plans, despite what some people may think.

More importantly, it’s an obvious gesture of inclusivity, as it encourages people in the most friendly way to visit and stay in these locations.

So, as Jim Harrison himself might say, Quinte West is the best at making you feel welcome AND connected.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
