Canadian Coast Guard members were called to the scene of a reported marine vessel fire earlier Friday afternoon.
Reports indicated several emergency responders, including Loyalist Township Emergency Services, Prince Edward Fire & Rescue, the Ontario Provincial Police, local paramedics and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre were dispatched to the waters between Amherst Island and Prince Edward County for a report of a marine fire with explosions around 1:30 p.m.
The occupants of the boat reportedly managed to escape on a dingy.
Visible smoke was spotted on the south side of Amherst Island almost into the United States.
LTES units and PEC fire crews were unable to reach the vessel, as it was too far out in the water, necessitating Coast Guard involvement.
No further details are available.
