A Belleville Councillor is seeking a plan to temporarily provide water supply to a group of residents in the west end.
Councillor Kelly Henderson put a motion forward at council’s meeting Monday night directing staff to meet with residents of Marshall Road, Bridge Street West, Peter Street and Moira Street who are experiencing periodic or permanent water deficiencies, until such time as a permanent municipal water source can be installed.
Councillor Henderson had previously held meetings with residents of that area to hear the issues being faced due to the lack of a water hookup.
Henderson told council around 75 residences are without a stable water source, some of them for decades.
“Some of these residents have spent more than 25 years of their lives praying for rain simply so they can do something as basic as wash a dish, wash their clothes or take a shower,” she explained.
“You might think I’m describing life in the 1930s or 1940s. I’m not. I’m taking about 2026 in the urban area of the City of Belleville, Ward 1. These are not isolated rural properties in the middle of nowhere.”
Henderson added many of these properties have aging, overtaxed and partially failing septic systems that are causing environmental issues.
Council voted to approve the motion unanimously.
Staff is slated to bring the report back to council by the September 28th meeting.
