It’s always good to get on the same page, now the question is “how will that story change with more writers at the table?”

Belleville City Council is holding a special meeting with MPP Tyler Allsopp (Bay of Quinte) and MPP Ric Breese (Hastings–Lennox and Addington) today at city hall. The meeting was originally scheduled for Feb. 17, though it does feel like they brought of February forward to today’s event.

Council will discuss a wide range of issues, including recent legislative changes and government programs connected to housing and homelessness. However, that’s far from the only area of concern.

Healthcare, building fees, Ontario Works support and other issues will also be on the agenda.

The real question is “what will happen after that meeting?”

Some people say “talk is cheap”. I prefer to say “talk is very expensive if it doesn’t result in anything but a soundbite.”

I have a positive relationship and respect for everyone at today’s meeting, including everyone around the horseshoe in Belleville and MPP’s Allsopp and Bresee, but if County Road 49 has taught us anything, it’s that actions speak louder than words.

The discussion about repairs hovered in the air for almost two decades. Now, it’s finally happening. When similar actions are taken to improve local healthcare or make a REAL dent in the homelessness issue, then accolades will follow. Credit where credit is due, and only when words become actions and not just another headline.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
