The Quinte West OPP would like to remind the public of the school crosswalk rules.
With the warmer weather, more students are walking to and from school and leaving the school property for lunch break. The crosswalks controlled by crossing guards are busier and guards are expressing safety concerns for the students.
When you come upon a school crosswalk, you are urged to follow these rules that pertain to drivers and cyclists:
Stop and yield: You must stop completely and yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks, crossovers, and school crossings.
Wait: Do not proceed until pedestrians have completely crossed the roadway and are safely on the sidewalk at crossovers and at crosswalks controlled by a crossing guard.
Check for pedestrians: Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning, and watch for children in school and residential zones.
