2ND UPDATE at 10:30 am – The Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating a fatal collision on Highway 401 eastbound near Deer Ridge Dr, west of Gananoque (and east of Joyceville Road).
On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, shortly before 11:30 p.m., Leeds OPP responded after a transport truck collided with a pick-up truck.
The driver of the transport truck did not sustain any injuries, while the driver of the pick-up truck, a 51-year-old man of Gatineau, Québec, was transported to a regional trauma centre, where he was pronounced deceased. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
The OPP East Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team is assisting with the investigation. This includes the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigators and a Collision Reconstructionist.
The highway remained closed for approximately eight hours which allowed for a thorough investigation.

UPDATE at 8:20 am – the eastbound 401 has reopened at Joyceville Road. No other details were released by the OPP.
ORIGINAL STORY – It was very slow overnight period for drivers heading east on the 401 past Kingston.
Just before midnight on Wednesday, there was a serious crash in the eastbound lanes of the 401 past Joyceville Road.
The highway was closed for the entire overnight period and was still closed this (Thursday) morning.
No details have been released about the nature of the crash or the injuries involved.
OPP advised late Wednesday night that a lengthy closure was expected.
