Fans of one of the biggest shows on the 90’s are mourning the loss of one of its most prominent and beloved stars.
James Van Der Beek, the actor best known for his role on 1990’s TV show Dawson’s Creek, has died. He was 48.
News of his death was tragic but ultimately was not surprising, especially to those who were given regular updates on his medical condition from Van Der Beek himself.
You see, after he announced in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer, he had been chronicling his life with cancer and frequently speaking of his family life on Instagram.
Even his death yesterday was partially released through his own Instagram page.
During his journey, he openly spoke to people about it and how he questioned himself and his role in the world.
He even called it “the best thing that ever happened to me” as it forced him to admit that he was worth of self-love, to be more present with his wife and children, and the power of looking his own mortality in the eye.
His posts and shared statements were often powerfully raw, genuine and unfiltered in a way that we rarely see from anyone including and especially those in the acting profession.
James Van Der Beek will be most often remembered as 15-year-old Dawson Leery, the aspiring director and central character in Dawson’s Creek, but his most impactful role will be the one he showed us when the cameras were off as someone who tackled life’s greatest challenges and never needed a second take.
I’m Paul martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
