A new research report is warning reduction of hospital beds, longer wait-times and job losses in the coming years due to a funding shortfall.
“Driven to the Brink: Projected Cuts to Intensify Ontario’s Hospital Crisis was released and broken down at a press conference in Belleville Wednesday Ontario Council of Hospital Unions/CUPE President Michael Hurley and senior research Doug Allan.
The report contrasts the additional resources required to simply maintain existing service with the government’s planned cuts by 2027-28, highlighting a 4,080 staffed bed capacity shortfall in the system.
In a media release, the OCHU/CUPE is calling on the province to increase health care funding.
The union says hospitals have been told to plan for two-per cent funding increases until 2027 – 28, far less than the six-per cent average in recent years. They say it will result in more than 10,000 job losses and the reduction of 2400 hospital beds.
The union does not represent employees with Quinte Health.
