The Quinte Judo club was well represented on Saturday in Peterborough, at the Golden North Open Judo Championships! Roya Shafai earned 3rd place in the women’s -57 kg division. This was one of the last events of the day, (waiting 6 hours after weigh in’s) with Shafai ending her first match in about 10 seconds for full point!

In Judo, throwing an opponent flat on their back, or pinning them for 20 seconds will end the 4-minute bout early. At this level of competition as well, an opponent may also have to “tap out” because of an armlock or choke (not bare handed). This level of competition is not allowed till the higher ranks. The Judo club also only trains 2 nights per week, so Shafai is spending some time training with the Alcateia BJJ club, to help improve her grappling skills.

The Quinte Judo club will be presenting their annual “Judoka of the Year” award on December 10th, at their dojo located in the Quinte Masonic Centre in Frankford (7 pm). This award is voted upon by members for the student who best exemplifies “Enthusiasm, Discipline & Perseverance” (under the age of 16). Special guest presenting this year will be former National Team Member Cathy Heney.
