A reported hostage situation involving a child over the weekend in Belleville has resulted in charges for a Belleville man.

Around 9:40 on Saturday night, a report came to police about screaming coming from a west end residence.

Officers arrived to find a male holding a young child, then that male brandished a knife before retreating into the residence and locking the door.

Police say containment was established around the home.

The male exited the residence at about 10:20 p.m., then after a brief foot pursuit, was taken into custody.

The child was unharmed.

A 36-year-old Belleville man was charged with hostage taking, abandoning a child, resisting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon.

He was held for a bail hearing.
