Royal Canadian Navy to hold small boat exercise in Trenton this weekend

The Royal Canadian Navy are set to hold a small boat exercise in Trenton this weekend at Baker Island Community Centre, 47 Island Park Dr, CFB Trenton.

120 sailors from across Ontario will take part in Exercise RIDEAU GUARD, an annual small boat exercise held from Friday, Oct 3 to Sunday, Oct 5.

Commander Paul Roddick, Commanding Officer of His Majesty Canadian Ship (HMCS) Carleton, will make opening remarks this morning at 11am.

Sailors will be practicing skills such as navigation, communication, command and control, diving, and emergency response scenarios.

Lieutenant (N) Chris Walkinshaw, Public Affairs Officer says this is the first time they have done the exercise in Trenton and they are excited for the opportunity to train in the Bay of Quinte.

“This is our first year in Trenton. It is usually done in Kingston or Ottawa, but this provides us an opportunity to work in a new environment, with new waterways, new challenges, and gives us a better training opportunity,” he said.

Lieutenant Walkinshaw says Exercise RIDEAU Guard is a refresher on individual skills the sailors may have learned on individual occupational courses and gives them an opportunity to work in a team environment, expanding beyond classroom learning.

Regions across the province were invited to nominate sailors to participate in the exercise.
