The Special Investigations Unit has concluded there are no reasonable grounds to believe an OPP officer committed a criminal offence following a summer collision in Alnwick-Haldimand Township.
On Canada Day, July 1, an officer spotted the driver of a Jaguar SUV going double the speed limit and pursued on County Road 45.
A short time later, the officer came upon a single vehicle collision involving the Jaguar in the hamlet of Fenella, where the vehicle had gone airborne and rolled.
The 25-year-old man behind the wheel was taken to hospital with a broken pelvis, traumatic brain injury and punctured lung.
SIU Director Joseph Martino stated in his report the officer was within his rights in attempting to stop the vehicle for possible infractions of the Highway Traffic Act, including speeding and stunt driving.
Martino also stated he was satisfied that the officer did not operate his police cruiser in contravention of the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law.
