A Frankford man is being found not criminally responsible for a shooting a year ago Friday.
Justice Joseph Dart rendered his verdict against Mitchell Barink Thursday in Belleville Court that he committed an act of attempted murder on October 31, 2024 on Belleville Road in Frankford, but is not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder.
This was based off psychiatric assessments conducted on Barink.
He had pled guilty in the incident, but noted his disorder as a possible exemption from more serious charges, which Ontario Crown Attorney Lee Burgees said was accepted as appropriate under the Criminal Code by the Crown.
Barink, 27 at the time of the shooting, had been facing related firearm charges, which were withdrawn by the Crown.
He was remanded to a psychiatric facility and will appear before the Ontario Review Board for a disposition hearing within 45 days.
The incident led to serious, life-threatening injuries for one woman, who was taken to a regional trauma centre for treatment.
The victim, her husband, mother and two children were present and all submitted victim impact statements to the court.
