To mark a major milestone, 100+ Women Who Care Quinte voted to donate in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
At its 10th Anniversary celebration on Wednesday night, the group chose to donate to Tears Mean Love, a local program that provides financial support to families with children fighting cancer.
Program founder Evelyn Wilson says the funding will be helpful because they just had five new families that have been diagnosed with cancer.
“The families will receive a cheque and they can use their money towards mortgage, rent, whatever they need to,” Wilson explained.
“We also provide gas cards and grocery gift cards and we like to provide special little gift cards for the siblings.”
She added the timing of the donation couldn’t be more fitting.
“This is actually perfect timing because of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,” Wilson praised.
“This gets out even more awareness that awareness brings more funding and that’s what it did. We are ecstatic.”
Since its inception 10 years ago 100+ Women Who Care Quinte has donated nearly $369,000 to 36 local charities.
A donation total to Tears Mean Love will be announced later.
