An event that aims to support survivors and help end sexual violence returned to Downtown Belleville this evening.
Belleville’s Take Back the Night saw community members come together to end sexual and gender-based violence in Market Square.
Take Back the Night is a rally and march that happens in Belleville and around the world with the goal to raise awareness, empower individuals, support survivors in their healing, and end sexual violence of all forms. It began in the 1970s in response to incidents of violence against women and was based on the premise that women should be able to go out at night and feel safe in the community without risk of violence, and that the responsibility for preventing violence is not to be placed on survivors of that violence. Today, the movement recognizes and embraces survivors of all gender identities and backgrounds from around the world.
This year’s theme was “Strength & Unity, Power & Community.” A Cirlce of Unity was formed, creating a space where survivors can feel empowered, connected, and supported by one another.
During the rally, survivor stories were highlighted through a special booklet that reflects a range of lived experiences. Some survivors even had the courage to share their story with the circle.
The march began at Market Square, headed north on Front St, right onto Victoria Ave, right onto Pinnacle St, then finished back at Market Square. During the march, chants were shouted aloud including safe streets, believing survivors, and bodily autonomy.
The rally and march was followed by a candlelight vigil representing the commitment to supporting survivors and the unity in working to end sexual violence, and a time to reflect and envision a safe place for everyone.
