A very special group was honoured on Tuesday at the Quinte Health meeting in Bancroft (at North Hastings Hospital).
The following is the presentation that was made to the the North Hastings Hospital team and community first responders.
PRESENTATION NOTES
At the beginning of each meeting of the Quinte Health Board of Directors, we shine a well-deserved spotlight on the great work of a team, or a team member, who brings our Quinte Health values to life— Imagine it’s you, Value everyone, We all make a difference, and Stronger together.
Today, we are honoured to recognize the North Hastings Hospital team and community first responders, who came together with extraordinary collaboration and compassion in response to a serious accident on July 23. That afternoon, a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 28E sent numerous patients to North Hastings Hospital. What followed was an incredible display of teamwork and resilience from physicians, nurses, diagnostic imaging, and support staff, alongside paramedics, fire crews, police officers, and the trauma team at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. From the scene to the hospital, first responders worked tirelessly to stabilize and transport patients.
Paramedics Marcel Oros, Sean Foster, Christine Goodwin and many others provided critical care and pain control, advocated for Ornge involvement, and stayed on site until every patient was supported. The local fire department skillfully managed extrication and traffic control, while OPP Constable J. Tait remained at the hospital to lend assistance and reassurance.
Inside North Hastings Hospital, staff and physicians responded without hesitation—with some team members returning after already finishing their shift. Mia Quigley stepped in from the inpatient floor, Della Wannamaker returned after minimal sleep, and Drs. Griffin, Ferreira, and Ahearn dropped everything to join the emergency response. Patient Care Lead Cris Fransky coordinated the team, Jody Ives and Evelyn Beachli helped ensure the department ran smoothly, and Erin Kavanagh and Sarah White worked seamlessly in Diagnostic Imaging to ensure rapid, thorough care for all patients.
Each person recognized where they were most needed and contributed with remarkable skill and compassion. The success of this coordinated effort was felt by everyone present. A family member of two of the patients was overheard saying, “They are in the best hands they could ever be in right now.” Visiting physician Dr. Graves also noted, “Wow! When you guys rally, you really rally together.”
Thanks to this exceptional collaboration, all patients survived—a true testament to the strength and dedication of the North Hastings Hospital team and their partners.
Tammy Davis, Interim Program Director for Emergency, DVSARP, Community and Rural Services, shared: “I’m so proud of how our community, staff and physicians came together to provide exceptional care to our patients, their families and each other. I am so impressed with this team and with how Jody Ives, our Interim Patient Services Manager, led and supported them.” This month’s Values in Action Award goes to the North Hastings Hospital team and the many community partners who played a role in this remarkable response, including Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Services. Thank you for living Quinte Health’s values and showing what is possible when we are truly stronger together.
