A historic building has been destroyed by fire in Deseronto.
Town fire crews, along with support from the Mohawk Fire Department were called in to put out a blaze at Waterside Market, a former flea market and current storage facility on Main Street around 6 p.m. Monday evening.
Main Street was closed between Mill St. and Brant St. as crews worked well into the night attempting to douse the fast-moving fire.
Parts of the structure were reported as having collapsed and large plumes of smoke could be seen in the area.
There were no injuries reported, nor has a cause been determined yet.
In a media release Tuesday evening, Deseronto Town Manager Bryan Brooks stated the building was deemed a total loss and the property owner has been contacted by the OPP.
OPP East Region stated before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday that Main St. in Deseronto remains closed between Mill and Brant Sts. OPP will remain on the scene until it is handed over to the municipality to manage the area going forward.
Prior to its current use, the building also used to serve as a Rathbun Lumber Company drying kilns facility, as well as a home for Dominion Match Company, a meat plant, a cheese factory and an eyewear manufacturing plant.
