A celebration was in order for people who have gone the extra mile in supporting Canadian Mental Health Association Hastings Prince Edward.
Three Champion of Care awards were handed out by the CMHA HPE Board of Directors at its Annual Board Meeting for those who have supported people facing mental health and addictions challenges.
The three winners are Brandi Hodge, Mike Pretsell and Luke Hendry, the latter additionally winning the CMHA Ontario Media Award for excellence in reporting on these important issues.
The provincial Media Award honours journalists who demonstrate excellence in reporting on mental health and addictions, challenge stigma, and elevate the voices of people with lived experience.
Through this work, and in earning both awards, the board stated Hendry has shown how his thoughtful, compassionate, and courageous journalism can shine a light on mental health, addictions, homelessness and housing in our community. His reporting not only informs but inspires, amplifying voices that are often unheard and sparking meaningful conversation and action.
The board stated Hodge demonstrated tireless advocacy and extraordinary dedication as a champion of mental health and addictions care. Since the 2024 state of emergency, their partnership has been invaluable, including guidance at the Resource Table that contributed to the success of the HART Hub application and the securing of 1 Alhambra Square as the future home of The Bridge.
By uniting stakeholders, leveraging influence, and leading vital fundraising efforts such as the Mayor’s Challenge, they have significantly strengthened access to mental health and addictions care in the region. Their impact continues to drive meaningful change through collaboration, compassion, and community leadership.
As the top individual fundraiser in the 2025 Push-Up Challenge, Pretsell made a powerful contribution to raising awareness about mental health and addictions.
The national campaign encourages participants to complete daily push-ups tied to key mental health statistics— symbolizing the approximately 2,000 lives lost to suicide worldwide each day.
Pretsell’s generous support, both financial and personal, will strengthen CMHA HPE programs and ensure help is available when clients need it most. His leadership demonstrates how individual commitment can create lasting community impact.
The dedication and caring of this year’s recipients are truly making a difference in the lives of people in our community living with mental health and addictions challenges,” stated Lisa Ali, CEO, CMHA HPE.
“We are proud to celebrate their achievements and the positive change they bring to Hastings Prince Edward.”
