Speed cameras being targeted in Belleville

Belleville’s automated speed enforcement cameras have been targeted again.

City police stated that for the second weekend in a row, two cameras had been defaced.

A resident informed police around 2:30 a.m. Sunday that a camera had been spray painted black on Sidney St.

Later on Sunday, police were further notified that the camera on Harder Dr. had been vandalized with the same black spray paint.

Transportation and Operations Service Manager Joe Reid stated on the prior weekend, the Harder Dr. camera had been knocked over and one on Victoria Ave. had its glass broken.

In all cases, members of Belleville Public Works and a company the city leases to undertake this type of work were brought in to remove the paint.

Investigations into these incidents and what the motives for defacing the cameras are continuing and anyone with information is asked to call the Belleville Police or Crime Stoppers.

As of Monday morning, the speed camera on Sidney Street had not been repaired.
