Freezing rain expected to hammer area from Bancroft to Ottawa

A significant weather event could cause a series of problems across the Quinte Region on Wednesday especially in the Bancroft area.

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for the entire region.

In the area stretching from North Hastings (Bancroft) to Ottawa, they could receive 10 to 20 mm of freezing rain over a 24-hour period starting as early as late Tuesday night.

Ice build up is likely to cause tree branches to break. Widespread utility outages are possible. Freezing rain may fall heavily at times. In this case, the precipitation may not freeze immediately, which may lead to localized flooding in low lying areas.

In the Centre Hastings area (Madoc, Marmora, Tweed), the freezing rain should be lighter but could still be significant with 2 to 5 mm possible.

Forecasts are also calling for 20 to 40 mm of rain for a widespread area stretching from Centre Hastings to Prince Edward County and Brighton through Quinte West and Belleville over to Kingston.  Locally higher amounts are possible in areas that receive thunderstorms.

A series of low pressure systems will lead to significant rainfall across parts of southern and Ontario. Heavy downpours may cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
