New timeline for County Rd. 49 project in PEC approved

By Brock Ormond Feb 11, 2026 | 3:15 PM

A timeline for construction on a major road project in Prince Edward County has been extended.

County Council chose to approve an amending agreement with the province for the rehabilitation of County Road 49 at its meeting on Tuesday.

This Transfer Payment Agreement was a result of a successful application under the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing funding stream established by the Government of Ontario in which the municipality has received $19,993,424 towards the project.

In a report to council, project manager Jeff Shortt stated an extension request was submitted by municipal staff on August 29, 2025, with a request to extend the project completion deadline to December 31, 2028, beyond the originally approved deadline of March 31, 2028.

That request was approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure on December 17, 2025.

County Road 49 is a stretch of highway that connects the County with the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Deseronto and is considered one of the largest entry points to the County from Highway 401.

Staff will prepare the required documents and send them to the MOI for the execution of the amending agreement.

Shortt added efforts will continue in hopes of securing the remainder of the funding for the project.
