The L&A County OPP is reminding members of the public to exercise caution and be diligent when hiring companies or individuals for home renovations, landscaping, driveway paving, and other residential services-particularly when asked to provide payments upfront.
The OPP continues to receive reports from residents who have lost funds after entering into agreements with contractors who fail to complete the work or disappear entirely after receiving deposits.
How to Protect Yourself
The OPP encourages homeowners to take the following steps before hiring any contractor:
•Research the company: Look for established businesses with verifiable addresses, websites, and customer reviews.
•Ask for references: Contact previous clients to verify the quality and reliability of the contractor’s work.
•Avoid large upfront payments: Reputable companies typically require reasonable deposits, not full or near full payment before work begins.
•Get a written contract: Ensure all details-scope of work, timelines, costs, and payment schedules-are clearly documented.
•Do not feel pressured: Be cautious of contractors who use aggressive sales tactics, limited-time offers, or unsolicited door-to-door approaches.
•Verify identification and credentials: Ask to see business licences, insurance documents, and any relevant certifications.
Red Flags to Watch For
•Requests for significant cash deposits or full payment in advance
•Unmarked vehicles or lack of professional equipment
•No written estimate or refusal to provide a contract
•Contractors who cannot provide references or verifiable business information
•Promises that seem too good to be true, such as drastically reduced prices
