In a ‘clash of the titans’ in the East Conference, the Trenton Golden Hawks managed to come out on top.
The Hawks overturned a third period deficit with three unanswered goals to down the Stouffville Spirit 5-3 on Sunday at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens.
Isaiah Shantz used his veteran’s savvy to come up clutch, notching the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, then iced the contest with an empty-netter in the final minute.
Candon O’Neill had equalized the score just 24 seconds after Stouffville had taken the lead on a Zack Corte marker following a big hit in the corner.
The two teams had traded goals through the first two periods and 50 seconds, with Wyatt Gregory nabbing his 11th of the season and Daylen Moses his 10th, stickhandling between tallies from Jacob Martineau and Evan Breckles.
O’Neill posted a three-point night, with Lucas Digiantommaso adding two assists and one each going to Duncan Schneider, Taeo Artichuk, Josh Penney, Jack Ziliotto, Thomas Kuipers and Mason Musclow.
Hayden Jeffery was rock solid again with a 30-save effort in a clutch win to put Trenton into a prime spot to take the East Conference crown.
The Hawks are back at it Monday at 7 p.m., taking a quick jaunt to Cobourg.
