The Wellington Dukes rode a dominant first period to victory on Sunday afternoon.
Wellington scored six in the first and held off the struggling Cobourg Cougars 8-5 at Lehigh Arena for its third straight victory.
The offensive attack started early with Ethan Murray and Tristan Williams scoring twice each, the latter picking up his first two goals as a Duke, while Landon Marleau and Zach Mascard each scored once from the edge of the Cobourg crease on PJHL recall Sacha O’Brien to bust the game open early for the host Dukes.
Wellington cooled off in the second period as the Cougars got a pair of markers back from Ivan Mentiukov and Seva Bashutin to cut the Dukes lead down to 6-3.
Will Mitchell came back and gave Wellington a 7-3 advantage within the first minute of the third but still had to weather a storm from the Cougars.
Cobourg cut into the deficit some more with goals from Riley Misa and Jaden Lyons, but a late shorthanded marker from Evan Erwin officially put the dagger in the visitors.
Mascard, Erwin, Murray, Mitchell, Williams, Marleau, Liam Campbell, Kyle Grasby and Vince Albanese all registered multi-point games and Royden Smith earned his second win of the weekend with 33 saves.
The Dukes are now back over .500 and have a shot at extending their winning streak with a home game against the North York Rangers on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
