The investigation is continuing into the death of a student with special needs earlier this month at Trenton High School.
16-year-old Landyn Ferris, a grade 10 student at THS, was found unresponsive in a sensory room at the school back on May 14th.
He was taken by Paramedics to Trenton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Josh Nisker, the lawyer for Landyn’s mother Brenda Davis, has confirmed to our newsroom that Landyn had Dravet Syndrome, a seizure disorder where sleep is one trigger (in Landyn’s case).
Davis intends to launch a lawsuit alleging negligence against the school board and any individuals responsible for Landyn’s care.
Nisker says the family has received very limited information on what happened but that they were told Landyn was found unresponsive when they went to get him at the end of the school day to get on the bus.
He says Brenda Davis needs answers about what happened (including how long he had been left alone) and those answers need to drive change so that another tragedy like this never happens again.
In a statement released on Thursday, Minister of Education Stephen Lecce said the loss of a child is “an unspeakable tragedy.”
Lecce also said the police and school board have launched an investigation into the incident.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board has released an official statement about Landyn’s death. It is included below.
STATEMENT – We acknowledge that an emergency response occurred at Trenton High School for a student on May 14, 2024. Tragically, the student later passed away.
